The “honey” part of the name comes from the sweet taste of the large bean pods produced by the tree. We have had reports that there is regional variation when it comes to how much the whitetails prefer the bean pods, but down here in the south, the foot-long fruit doesn’t spend much time on the ground before the deer clean them up.

One characteristic of the Thornless Honey Locust that I love is that it drops its fruit over a long period of time. Bean pods will be available for forage throughout the fall and in to the winter months.

Lastly, the bean pods are a great source of protein and carbohydrates for your whitetail herd. Honey locust is often planted in pastures for livestock due to its nutritional value.
