A Groundcover Rose That Earns Its Keep All Season

Scarlet Drift® Groundcover Rose (Rosa 'Meibenbino') is the earliest-blooming member of the Drift® Rose family, and it delivers vivid scarlet-red flowers from early spring all the way through the first hard frost. Hardy in zones 5 through 11, it handles both summer heat and cold winters without complaint. If you've been searching for a low-maintenance, high-impact rose that actually lives up to its reputation, this is it.

As America's largest online plant nursery, we've shipped thousands of Scarlet Drift® plants to gardeners coast to coast, and it consistently ranks among our top-performing groundcover roses. Its combination of near-continuous bloom, disease resistance, and compact size makes it one of the most versatile roses we carry.

Features and Characteristics

Scarlet Drift® stays compact and tidy, reaching just 1 to 2 feet tall with a spread of 1 to 2 feet. That petite footprint makes it easy to tuck into tight spots without worrying about overgrowth. The blooms are a rich, true scarlet red, and they appear in flushes from early spring through late fall with minimal deadheading required.

  • Mature height: 1-2 ft tall, 1-2 ft wide
  • Bloom period: early spring through late fall, one of the longest in the Drift® series
  • Fragrant flowers that attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators
  • Glossy, disease-resistant foliage naturally resists black spot and powdery mildew
  • Hardy in zones 5-11, tolerating both heat and cold across a wide range

The glossy foliage stays clean and attractive even without a spray schedule. Because Rosa 'Meibenbino' was bred specifically for disease resistance, most gardeners report going entire seasons without any fungal issues. The light fragrance is a bonus that the Drift® series doesn't always advertise but gardeners consistently notice up close.

Landscaping Uses and Design Ideas

Because Scarlet Drift® spreads low and wide, it's a natural fit for sloped areas where erosion control matters, as well as front-of-border plantings where you want color without height. It works equally well in containers on a patio or deck, where the cascading habit softens the edges of a pot beautifully. See our full Drift® Rose collection if you want to mix varieties for a season-long color display.

For companion planting, pair Scarlet Drift® with silver-foliaged plants like Russian sage or lamb's ear to make the red blooms pop. It also contrasts well with ornamental grasses and low-growing lavender. Planting three or five in a staggered row creates a dense, weed-suppressing groundcover that looks intentional from day one.

  • Slopes and banks: suppresses weeds and holds soil
  • Border edging: repeating masses of three or more create a ribbon of color
  • Containers: compact size suits pots 12 inches or larger
  • Mixed beds: pairs well with ornamental grasses, lavender, and salvia
  • Pollinator gardens: steady blooms feed bees and butterflies all season

Planting and Care

Scarlet Drift® performs best in full sun, meaning at least six hours of direct sunlight per day. More sun equals more blooms, so choose your sunniest spots first. It adapts to most well-drained soils and, once established (typically after one full growing season), tolerates heat and brief dry spells without much fuss.

Water deeply once or twice per week during the first season to help roots establish. After that, rainfall handles most of the work in average climates, though supplemental watering during extended dry spells keeps bloom production strong. Avoid overhead watering in the evening to minimize any chance of foliar disease, even though this variety handles it better than most.

Pruning is simple. In early spring, cut the plant back by about one-third to encourage fresh growth and a tidy shape. Light deadheading throughout the season, or simply shearing the plant back after a heavy flush, triggers the next round of blooms within a few weeks. Fertilize in spring with a balanced rose fertilizer and again in midsummer to support those late-season flushes. Sweet little book
Format: Board book
Our toddler grandchildren (ages 2 and 5) continually pick this and other books in the series out for us to read aloud. Besides whimsical illustrations, the book is informative with simple facts about hedgehogs hoglets.

It's a hedgehog!
Format: Board book
My sweet daughter-in-law is expecting our 1st grandchild. Since we are a huge family of readers I asked my son & dil to give me names for some of their favorite books growing up. I bought a few of their favorites & since she loves hedgehogs I thought this would be a cute little book for bedtime. As our granddaughter starts to read by herself this will be a great starter book to have, too.
